KOSDAQ 1000
On January 26, 2026, the KOSDAQ index surpassed the 1,000 mark during trading—a milestone referred to as "Cheon-sdaq"—for the first time in approximately four years since January 6, 2022. The index opened at 1,003.90, driven by institutional buying, with significant gains seen in growth sectors such as biotechnology, secondary batteries, and robotics. Due to the rapid rise in futures and spot prices, a buying "sidecar" was activated at 9:59 AM, suspending program buying orders for five minutes; this was the first sidecar activation of the year.
In the broader market, the KOSPI index also briefly reclaimed the 5,000 mark, reaching an all-time high of 5,023.76 early in the session before trading flat. This surge was partly attributed to Samsung Electronics, which showed strength following news that it would supply 6th generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM4) to Nvidia and AMD. Additionally, the South Korean won strengthened significantly, with the KRW/USD exchange rate dropping by nearly 20 won to open at 1,446.1 won
